MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University volleyball team picked up another CIAA Northern Division win on Monday evening against the Lincoln University (PA) Lady Lions. Monday's game was Chowan's Dig Pink match with collected funds benefiting breast cancer patients and their families.
Karina Monroe had a monster night for the blue and white as she tallied 17 kills in the win.
Callie Armistead amassed 30 assists to lead the Hawks to a 3-0 victory, and
Cindy Ehrich held down the back row with 11 digs.
Chowan jumped to an early 8-1 lead in the first a scattered offensive attack with
Monica Ruffin,
Nikira Fults, and
Allison Smith contributing to the CU rally. The Hawks were able to maintain a commanding lead throughout the first set to earn the 25-13 win.
Chowan and Lincoln (PA) battled early in the second set with neither team able to remain in the driver's seat until a Lady Lion attack error turned the serve back over to Chowan. With Chowan leading 18-15,
Callie Armistead's consecutive service aces allowed Chowan to pull ahead 20-15. The five point differential was the biggest lead held by either team in the set. The Hawks were able to capture the second set 25-20.
The third set proved to be a different story as Chowan scored five points before the Lady Lions were able to score. The Hawks made things interesting while ahead 6-2. Four straight attack errors by the Hawks resulted in the set being tied 6-6. After a quick timeout Chowan regained their composure, earned the serve back, and maintained the lead throughout the remainder of the third set. Their 25-21 win in the third set secured the 3-0 victory over Lincoln (PA).
Monday's win marked the Hawks' second CIAA Northern Division win in as many days. They improve to 13-5 overall and 12-1 in CIAA play while the Lady Lions fall to 1-12 on the 2012 season and 1-12 in conference play. Chowan heads to Shippensburg on Saturday to take on the Raiders. Match time is set for 5:00 pm.
