Hawks Split at Shaw Tri-Match

RALEIGH, NC- The Chowan University volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon at the Shaw University Tri-Match.  The Hawks defeated the Shaw Lady Bears 3-0 in the first set but feel to Claflin 3-1 in the second set. 
 
The Hawks defeated the Shaw University Bears in straight sets in their first match of the tri-match.  Final scores for the first match were 25-7, 25-14, and 25-12. 
 
Chowan dominated in the first set after taking advantage of multiple attack errors by the Lady Bears.  The second and third sets were highlighted with Nikira Fults and Monica Ruffin collecting 12 and nine kills respectively.  April Wolfe tallied 10 digs in the first match victory. 
 
The Hawks fell to Claflin 3-1 in the second match of the tri-match (22-25, 25-21, 23-25, 22-25). 
 
Chowan battled to tie Claflin 22-22 in the first set.  Two kills from Katherin Fischer and an attack error allowed the Panthers to take the first set 25-22. 
 
In the second set, with the score tied 14-14, a kill by Karina Monroe allowed Chowan to take the lead.  The Hawks maintained the lead for the remainder of the second set to earn the 25-21 victory. 
 
Chowan came within two points of the Panthers near the end of the third set, rallying to make the score 22-24.  A ball handling error by Claflin resulted in the Hawks trailing by a mere point with the score 23-24.   A kill by the Panthers' Kiara Johnson secured the third set victory for Claflin. 
 
The Hawks and Panthers were tied 22-22 again in the fourth set but three Hawk errors allowed Claflin to walk away with the 25-22 set win, and 3-1 win in the match. 
 
Karina Monroe collected 15 kills in the loss to Claflin, followed by Nikira Fults with 14.  CIAA Rookie of the Week Cindy Ehrich led the back row with 16 digs while April Wolfe chipped in with 14 digs. 
 
Chowan moves to 16-7 after Saturday's contests.  The Hawks were originally scheduled to play Virginia State University on Monday.  Due to pending inclement weather the match will be rescheduled.  Details will be released once they become available.
