GREENVILLE, SC- This past week, the 2009 NCCAA All South Region Softball Team was announced. Multiple Hawks were selected into this year's All South Region Team. Sophomores Brook Owen and Tricia Gorman, Freshman Allie Kolezynski, and Senior Pitcher Shellie Wimpey represent Chowan on the All South Region Team.
Owen (Pasadena, MD) leads the team in runs scored (36) while second on the team in total bases (73), hits (57), and stolen bases (13). In Owen's second season as a Hawk, the Maryland native has improved in many batting categories including batting average (.345), slugging (.442), and on-base (.415). Owen had a season-high three RBIs in multiple games this season. Recently, Owen's game-winning double in the sixth helped the Hawks edge Emmanuel College in the NCCAA South Regional Semi-Finals earlier this month.
Gorman (Ambridge, PA) leads the Hawks in doubles (16), RBIs (45), and slugging (.507) while second on the team in sac flies (3). Gorman's best performance came two weeks ago as Chowan swept North Carolina Wesleyan College by the final scores of 9-1 and 11-0. Gorman batted 5-7 with three RBIs and three doubles in the wins. Last month, Gorman's game-winning two RBI double against Limestone College helped the Hawks begin a seven-game winning streak towards the end of March.
Kolezynski (Strongsville, OH) leads the team in numerous batting catergories including batting average (.360), hits (59), and stolen bases (24). The Ohio native is second on the team in wins (13) behind Wimpey. Kolezynski pitched her first-career no-hitter back in March against Shaw University. Kolezynski was recognized as NCCAA Student-Athlete of the Week during the week of February 16th - 22nd while being among NCAA Division II leaders in stolen bases. Kolezynski's best performance came over a month ago against Lees-McRae College as she amassed five RBIs in the win.
Wimpey (Elizabeth City, NC) leads the team in almost all major pitching categories including wins (16), strikeouts (140), and innings pitched (175.1). This season, Wimpey shattered the single-season strikeout record (118) that she set last season. Wimpey threw two no-hitters this season against Sweetbriar College (2/22) and Shaw University (3/12); adding to her total of four career no-hitters. Wimpey struck out a season-high 14 batters over two months ago against Virginia State University. Wimpey has four straight 100 strikeout seasons.
The Hawks are preparing for the 2009 NCCAA National Tournament which will be held in Palm Beach, Florida on May 7th - 9th. Palm Beach Atlantic University will host the tournament this season. For more information on the tournament, please check back later for more details.
