Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO - The baseball team moved to 7-3 overall after splitting a doubleheader with Fairmont State University this afternoon. Chowan took the first game 7-0 but fell in the nightcap 1-0. Chris Nelson tossed a two-hit, shut out in the 7-0 win but the Hawks were held to three hits in the nightcap to take the 1-0 loss.
Chowan jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after scoring three runs in their second at-bat in game one. Shortstop Lee Dickens knocked in two of those runs with a two-out double to highlight the inning. Mike Taylor drove in two runs in the Hawks' fourth at-bat to help Chowan to a 6-0 lead over the Falcons. Chris Nelson went on to throw the entire game, giving up just two hits and striking out seven Falcon batters. John Kellett scored on an infield ball to give Chowan a 7-0 lead and eventual win. Justin Bagbey finished up 2-3 at the plate with one RBI while Jordan Whitlatch was 2-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Nelson improves to 3-1 on the year after today's shut out win.
Ryan Bradshaw suffered a tough loss in the night cap. The freshman gave up just five hits and struck out three Falcon batters but his teammates couldn't get the bats going as they were held to three hits. Fairmont's Doug Politz picked up the win on the mound for Fairmont, throwing five innings. Jason Gladen gets the save after protecting the Falcon lead over the final two innings of play.
Chowan will wrap up the three-game series with the Falcons tomorrow as they will play a single, nine inning game. First pitch is set for 12:00pm.
