HAMPTON, VA - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced today the 2009 All-CIAA and All CIAA Rookie Teams as selected by the CIAA Volleyball Coaches Assosication. Chowan's
Karina Monroe was tabbed the CIAA Rookie of the Year after turning in a stellar first year performance. Monroe was also tabbed as an All-CIAA First Team Middle Blocker and named to the All-CIAA Rookie Team. The Hawks secured the #1 seed in the CIAA West Division after wrapping up the season with a 24-8 overall and 14-1 CIAA record in their first season playing as a full member of the league.
Karina Monroe led the team in kills (329) and total blocks (64) this season. She hit at a .333 clip, a mark that also led the team. Monroe earned CIAA Rookie of the Week twice this season.
Victoria Lewis was named an All-CIAA Outside Hitter. She tallied 278 season skills and led the team in service aces at 108 on the year. Lewis had 238 digs and 24 season blocks. Lewis was named CIAA Player of the Week one time this season.
Also on the All-CIAA First Team as a Setter was
Callie Armistead. The freshman also was named to the All-CIAA Rookie Team after leading the CIAA in total assists this season. She had a league-leading 966 assists this season in her first year of collegiate competition. She was named CIAA Rookie of the Week one time earlier this season.
Antoinette McCollough earned All-CIAA Middle Blocker, Second Team honors after turning in another solid season for the Hawks. She was second on the team in kills with 267 and hit at a .296 clip.
Desaray Turner was named All-CIAA, Second Team Outside HItter after totaling 247 kills, 72 service aces, and a team-high 243 digs.
The Hawks will participate in their first-ever CIAA Tournament this weekend. The All-CIAA teams will be honored in Hampton this Thursday at the CIAA Volleyball Championships Luncheon at 12:30pm. Tournament play will begin on Friday morning. The Hawks claimed the #1 seed out of the West Division. A full schedule of play will be released later today.
