Chowan Athletics to Induct Hall of Fame Class of 2009

Saturday Marks the 24th Class to be Inducted

MURFREESBORO - The Chowan University community will come together on Saturday to induct the newest members of the Jim Garrison/Chowan University Hall of Fame. This year's class marks the 24th class to be inducted. This year's class includes five members that have had major impacts on Chowan University and the athletic programs that they represented during their playing and coaching careers. 

Jennifer Murden Allen will be inducted after playing a integral role on the Chowan softball team at a time where it was considered one of the top programs on the east coast. Allen, a native of Norfolk, graduated from Chowan in December of 2007 after playing four seasons under then-coach Jack Goldberg. She helped the program to four successful seasons with 125 career wins to just 30 career losses. The starting shortstop set and still holds many Chowan softball program records, one which is career innings played (1,010).

Madison "Revis" Conrad will be inducted posthumously and was a standout player on the Chowan football program from 1962-1964 under legendary coach Jim Garrison. The Lexington, North Carolina native made his home after college in Hampton, Virginia. For more than 30 years he was well-known in the coaching and education world, working with Kecougtan High School.  Conrad passed away in January of this year and is dearly missed by his family, his friends, and his community. 

Lawrence Edwards is another standout football player that played under Garrison. He was an All-Conference defensive lineman and team leader. He earned a scholarship to play football after graduating from Chowan in 1967 at Temple University. He has made a mark in his hometown community of Spring Hope, North Carolina and spent his working years in Nash and Wilson Counties as a teacher and football coach. The recently retired Edwards is active with the Peachtree Baptist Church in Spring Hope and is a member of the North Carolina Baptist Men Diaster Relief Team. 

Greg Hollingsworth played basketball under another legendary coach from Chowan, Bob Burke. He played on two very successful Chowan teams, in fact, he helped lead the team to a NJCAA Final Four appearance in Kansas in his first season. After graduating from Chowan he earned a scholarship to play at the University of South Florida. He excelled at USF and put up 14 points a game in his senior season there. Greg now is employed in his hometown of Raeford, North Carolina and spends his free time couseling and working with at-risk youth in his community. 

Dan Surface has spent most of his working life at Chowan and serving the Murfreesboro community. Surface grew up in Blacksburg, Virginia and came to Chowan in 1970 as an assistant football coach and instructor in the Physical Education program. He left in 1975 to pursue other opportunities but came back in 1979. Then Ahtletic Director Jim Garrison hired Surface to head up the defensive efforts of the football program along with other coaching duties. In 30 years he has served in various positions including Head Football Coach, Assistant Atheltic Director, Head Golf Coach, Head Women's Basketball Coach and Associate Professor in the Sport Science and Physical Education Department. 

The Jim Garrison/Chowan University Hall of Fame Class of 2009 will be recognized at halftime of the Chowan vs. Saint Augustine's football game on Saturday. There will be a banquet on Saturday night to formally honor the class of 2009.
