MURFREESBORO - The baseball team swept a doubleheader against North Carolina Central University this afternoon, improving their overall record to 26-17 on the year. Chowan won game one 5-3 and game two 12-2. The Eagles fall to 6-26 after today's games.
The Hawks scored two runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to beat the Eagles 5-3 in game one. Relief pitcher/designated hitter Brandon Hamlett helped his cause after leading the inning off with a solo homerun to left field. PJ Sadler walked with the bases loaded a few batters later to give the Hawks a 5-3 lead and eventual win. Hamlett picked up the win after coming in for relief of starter Chris Nelson. Nelson threw 5.1 innings, giving up four hits, three runs, and striking out seven batters. Zack Beasley was 3-4 with one run scored and one RBI while Matt Crane was 2-3 at the plate.
Chowan pounded out 13 hits in the second game to win with a final score of 12-2. Anthony O'Brien picked up the win after throwing 5.1 innings and giving up six hits, two runs, and striking out five batters. Seniors Joey Ryder and David Hughes had stellar outings on senior day. Ryder was 2-4 at the plate with a grand slam while Hughes was also 2-4 with a homerun and a triple. Jordan Whitlatch was 2-3 at the plate with two runs scored.
The Hawks will host Virginia State University in a doubleheader on Sunday. Game time is slated for 12:00pm.
