Football Enjoys First Winning Season As A Four-Year School

Box Score

Senior fullback Jay Staten rushed for 127 yards and one touchdown as Chowan held on for a 27-20 win against New Jersey City at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.

Chowan (5-4) led 7-3 at halftime and increased its lead to 20-3 with a pair of third-quarter touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Tim Mitchell tossed a 55-yard touchdown to senior wide receiver Jeremy Forbes with 8:48 left in the third quarter. The extra point was blocked leaving the Braves with a 13-3 lead.

After forcing a fumble at the New Jersey City 26-yard line, Chowan drove five plays -- all on the ground -- for another score. Staten plunged in from the 1-yard line with 5:54 left in the third quarter, giving the Braves a 20-3 lead.

New Jersey City (3-7) answered on its next series. The Gothic Knights drove 72 yards in eight plays, capped off by a 14-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Rob Warchol to freshman wide receiver David Irving with 2:38 left in the third quarter.

New Jersey City added a career-long 34-yard field goal from freshman John Santora to close to within 20-13 with 7:27 left in the fourth quarter.

Chowan put the game out of reach 27-13 when sophomore running back Lamont Boone scored on a 17-yard run with 2:20 left. The drive began at the Chowan 44-yard line when senior defensive tackle Jack Rennolds forced a fumble that was recovered by senior linebacker Lamont Gaddy.

New Jersey City closed to within 27-20 when Warchol tossed a 17-yard touchdown to sophomore wide receiver Lou Turso with 1:26 left. The Gothic Knight defense then held the Braves on three plays, forcing a punt from Chowan 45-yard line with 1:03 remaining. But New Jersey City was called for a running-into-the-kicker penalty, enabling Chowan to run out the clock.

The Chowan defense forced seven New Jersey City turnovers. All four of the Braves' touchdowns came following Gothic Knight fumbles.

In addition to Staten, freshman running back Keith Carter added 70 yards rushing on 13 carries. Lamont Boone contributed 67 yards on 14 carries as Chowan rolled up 274 yards rushing.

New Jersey City established three single-game records in the loss. Lou Turso had 14 receptions, surpassing the mark of 13 set by Vinnie Dortch in 1985. Turso also had 176 yards receiving, breaking Anthony Cardella's mark of 173 yards from 1984.

Rob Warchol completed 28 of 60 passes for 368 yards. He had two touchdowns and three interceptions. Warchol's 60 attempts broke the record of 49 set by Joe DiVincenzo in 1972 and Darren Miller from earlier this season.
